Younger participates of social networking sites is growing, so as educators, incorporating and encouraging structure online learning is essential. Proper netiquette also needs to be explicitly discussed to lessen cyber-bullying and the like. Many of "real" problems at school that my former students face, would often be started online.
I do think that the professional and personal line may be blurring. I am in agreement with the majority of the students in the study. Blackboard is more formal and is suited for academic discourse, whereas Facebook lends itself to more community building through informal social discussions. Dr. Buzzetto-More concluded that the college communities would like to see a combination of social networks, like Facebook and Blackboard, rather than over the other, to enhance and supplement the course, but not to replace it. All in all, the majority of the respondents positively viewed the social networking services as facilitating learning and engaging students. This "hybrid approach" is what I experienced in college, and I was an engaged learner.
